Leave Enough Time for Sleep

Leave time for sleep in your schedule and consider daytime restfulness as well as time in bed.

Understanding the topic

General guidance recommends about seven to nine hours of sleep a night for adults. Individual needs and circumstances differ. Time spent in bed is not necessarily time asleep, especially if falling asleep takes time or sleep is interrupted.

Make it practical

Work backwards from when you need to wake, allowing time to settle and sleep. Leave room for falling asleep and for any interruptions that affect the time you actually sleep. Notice daytime sleepiness and how rested you feel as well as the clock. If sleep remains difficult, or you have marked sleepiness or symptoms such as loud snoring and breathing interruptions, seek individual medical advice.
