Use Breathing and Effort to Judge Activity, Rather Than Sweat

Choose activity by ability and effort rather than treating sweat as the target.

Understanding the topic

Sweating is affected by heat, clothing and individual differences. It is not a target that proves an activity was effective. Relative effort is about how hard an activity feels for you, so the same pace can feel different to different people.

Make it practical

For aerobic activity, a useful rule of thumb for moderate effort is being able to talk but not sing comfortably. If speaking more than a few words requires a breath, effort may be vigorous. Start at a manageable level and adjust gradually. If a health condition affects your exercise, follow the individual guidance you have received from your clinician.
