Consider Sleep Duration, Timing and Daytime Function

Leave enough time for sleep and consider regularity, sleep quality and daytime symptoms together.

Several factors matter

Many adults need about seven to nine hours of sleep, with needs varying by age, health and circumstances. Time in bed and time asleep are different. A regular schedule can help, but keeping a clock target by cutting needed sleep is not the goal.

Fit the plan to your life

Work backwards from your wake time and allow for falling asleep and interruptions. Reduce large schedule changes when practical. Shift work and caring responsibilities may need a different plan. Midnight is not a universal health boundary.

Look beyond the clock

Notice repeated waking, loud snoring, breathing interruptions and daytime sleepiness. Avoid driving or hazardous tasks when sleepy. Persistent insomnia or marked sleepiness warrants medical assessment rather than stricter self-imposed rules.
